Summary
The Milkey project has a number of objectives, all of which are aimed at developing holistic system concepts for sustainable and low-emission milk production, focusing on key European regions. These include: - An analysis of the influencing factors and sustainability aspects of dairy farming systems in Europe; - Identification of the main priorities for sustainability in key European regions; - Assessment of the three pillars of sustainability on sample farms across Europe; - Assessment of interactions between the three pillars of sustainability and emission reduction potentials for key European regions; - Identification of key greenhouse gas emission reduction techniques for the respective dairy farming systems and regions; - Development and demonstration of an online monitoring tool for barn climate and emission control; - Support dairy farmers in improving the three pillars of sustainability of their farms; - Putting national research results into an international context and making them available to a broad public; - Initiate long-term inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation between scientists, stakeholders, farmers, agricultural advisors, industry, consumers and policy makers.
