Competence in Systems Science (under development)

The competence area Systems Science develops and applies innovative methods for the holistic analysis and context-specific design of circular bioeconomic systems. We combine qualitative and quantitative modelling methods to conduct a systemic analysis of innovations. The aim is to integrate these innovations into visionary system designs, while taking into account ecological, social and economic conditions at both regional and cross-scale levels.

Through our systems-based approach, we generate knowledge about systems, objectives and transformation.

To understand existing systems – in other words, to generate systemic knowledge – we examine the interrelationships, interactions and dynamics within value creation networks and supply systems. By establishing the competence area Systems Science we place particular emphasis on disruptive innovations and the factors driving and hindering them.

We generate targeted knowledge for sustainable circular bioeconomic systems by developing visionary system designs. In doing so, we take into account not only the regional scale but also links to supra-regional processes and structures.

Using the backcasting method, we gain transformation knowledge; in other words, we use our understanding of the end goal to design the transformation pathways and steps required to bring about targeted changes to existing systems. We develop new formats for stakeholder engagement and for steering the transformation processes using the Theory of Change approach.

Our overarching aim is to actively support the transition towards sustainable and resilient bioeconomic systems. We achieve this through the transdisciplinary involvement of partners from the field, particularly from the agricultural and forestry sectors, industry, politics and society.
