Summary
Within biogas plants, complex and dynamic microbial consortia are responsible for anaerobic degradation of organic biomass to biogas rich in methane. However, the majority of the micro-organisms involved in this process are up to now unknown just as their impact on reactors efficiency and performance. The biogas plants in Germany were evaluated in the biogas measuring program (BMP) parts one and two with respect to their performance, functioning, process stability and economy. In contrast, the systematic evaluation of the microbial communities responsible for biogas production especially in agricultural biogas plants is still missing. In context of the biogas measuring porgram part three, one major focus is on the unravelling of the systems micorbiology and the ecology within selected biogas plants in Germany. Aim of BMP3 is the elucidation of the impact of abiotic process factors on structure and development of the microbial consortia living in biogas reactors and their metabolic features.
