Summary
Assessing technical and institutional measures for the sustainable intensification of water use in agriculture in the Zayandeh-Rud River, Iran. Decreasing precipitation and rising demand for water lead to competition and production losses in irrigation agriculture in semi-arid regions of Iran. The aim of the project is to conceive and evaluate organizational and institutional measures that facilitate the adaptation and dissemination of innovative processes and technologies. This should contribute to a sustainable intensification and increase of water productivity in agriculture, reduce the need for water and promote the development of rural areas. The results of previous work point out that the impact of technical innovations on sustainable intensification in agriculture is strongly influenced by institutional factors such as the participation of the actors in decision-making processes. The research project aims to investigate the causes of barriers in the current institutional framework and governance structures of irrigation agriculture in Iran. Approaches to overcome barriers are to be found in order to facilitate the introduction of innovations. As a result, findings and recommendations for the promotion of transformation processes towards a sustainable intensification of irrigation agriculture in Iran and in general are expected. The results support the target group of farmers as well as other actors from the water and agricultural authorities, companies and NGOs to proactively participate in the transformation process.
