Summary
The aim of the project is the development of a screening method for raw materials to improve the shelf life of grain (barley). For this purpose optical spectroscopic methods for the detection of molds, in particular mycotoxins, are developed. At the same time, identification of existing fungal nests in grain silos will be improved. The new procedures target to enable existing grain sorting facilities to identify and sort out infested grains and other foreign bodies (such as larvae and pupae). This can be done directly when storing the grain, but also later during rearranging of the silo contents. A sorting out of infected grain before storage or during stock transfer allows new preventive and non-chemical measures to improve quality in both the protection of stored products and consumer protection. In the worst case, mycotoxins would pass through the entire production chain unnoticed and harm humans and animals already in low concentrations. Therefore, origin and real levels of mycotoxins in cereals will be examined in storage trials.
