Summary
URSOILL primary objective is to bolster the restoration of urban soils across the EU, and to repurpose it for new uses, continuing and improving the capacity of soil to provide ESs. This aim is pursued by establishing 5 urban LLs in EU Net-Zero cities with different climatic zones - Boreal (SE), Atlantic (ES), Alpine (IT), Mediterranean (GR) and Continental (LU) - countries with different socio-economic levels, including widening countries (GR), as well as countries with vast experience in LL generation (ES, IT), and countries with lesser or none experience (LU, SE). This variety of cities has been selected to maximise the replicability, and thus, the impact of the project. The LLs will act as hubs for developing innovative technological, scientific, and socio-economic solutions aligned with the EU Soil Strategy, particularly objectives 3, 4, and 8. Solutions will be co-created, tested, and validated in real-world settings, enabling their integration in LL cities and beyond. URSOILL will ensure long-term LL sustainability and establish best practices for future LLs and Lighthouses (LHs), supporting the EUs goal of 100 LLs and LHs by 2030. In essence, URSOILL revolves around two pivotal objectives: the sustainable operation of urban LLs and the pioneering of solutions to enhance urban soil health. This vision encompasses a comprehensive framework of technical and operational objectives, ranging from stakeholder engagement to policy recommendations, all curated to champion the cause of soil health.
