Summary
In order to keep the rise in global warming below 2C, it becomes clear that the mere reduction of greenhouse gas emissions will not be sufficient and that a CO2 drawdown from the atmosphere will be essential. One technological solution is the pyrolytic fixation of photosynthetically generated biomass to biochar. Biochar can be used as soil emendment as well as as source of nutrients. As a side effect, the pyrolysis process generates surplus energy, which can be used for heating or electricity production. The GFZ wants to investigate the magnitute of achivable negative emission depending on different feedstocks and process parameters. Of particular interest as feedstock are sewage sludge (heavy metals!), particle board wood remains or parts of compost sieve overflow. To investigate the potential of waste-based biochars in soils, moreover, the interaction of biochar with microbial communities and their impact on the biochar chemistry and mobilization of harmful pollutants will be studied in detail.
