From residual to valuable material: Microbial conversion to biobased chemicals (Photo: Gutjahr/ATB)

On September 27th–28th, the BeonNAT Consortium met in Cottbus for the 6th General Assembly of the project. They visited us at ATB on September 28th to tour our institute. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Venus, the group leader of the WG "Bioconversion," attended the General Assembly too, as he is a part of the project and leader of Work Package 4 (WP4), which focuses on PLA bioplastics for packaging.

About the project

The BeonNAT Project, dedicated to harnessing the potential of marginal lands across Europe, focuses on obtaining forest biomass. This biomass would then serve as a foundation for the production of eight products based on new bio-based value chains.

Utilizing forest biomass on marginal lands holds the potential to pave the way for the production of biodegradable bio-based products and bioactive compounds, with the aim of influencing the shift away from fossil-based substitutes.
BeonNAT will aid in mitigating the impacts of climate change by enabling smarter and more sustainable products and materials. This approach ensures the optimal utilization of renewable natural resources and opens up significant economic prospects for the bio-based economy in Europe.

The project's primary objective is to identify underused tree and shrub species in Europe capable of thriving in marginal lands in Romania, Spain, and Germany. Later on, the goal is to develop value-added bio-based products through a cascade exploitation process in bio-refineries.

In conclusion, the mission of the project is to bring the vision of a better and healthier planet to life through innovative solutions and more

We are delighted to be part of the project and to contribute to the cause through the research in the field of multifunctional biomaterials in which Dr.-Ing. Joachim Venus is involved in.
