Summary
In biogas fermenter, biomass is digested by a highly diverse and dynamic microbial community. Due to their complex interactions and syntrophic relationships, the microbial biocenosis reacts highly sensitive to chemical imbalances of intermediates (e.g. volatile fatty acids, ammonia and ammonium) resulting in a reduced process efficiency and stability. This project focuses on the anaerobic fermentation of farmland independent biomass with high nitrogen contents (e.g. grasses, legumes as well as biogenic agricultural waste material such as poultry manure), which may lead to the formation and accumulation of process-inhibiting free ammonia in the fermentation liquid. One goal is the development and optimization of technical and microbiological solutions to avoid substrateinduced ammonia-inhibition in biogas fermenters. Therefore different procedural strategies (Stripping, MAP) as well as the Anammox process will be evaluated in order to gain best removal rates and to obtain an estimation of economic efficiency. Central focal point is the optimization of powerful twophase leach-bed fermenter systems operated at thermophilic/hyperthermophilic temperatures enabling the high-throughput conversion of fibrous crop material. Besides engineering, also microbiological aspects will be studied. Basic knowledge about the response of microbial communities on varying ammonia concentrations will be gained. One aim is to determine the basics for the development of additives for bioaugmentation based on microorganism adapted to high ammonia contents. Overall goal is the development of strategies enabling the bioconversion of up-to-now rarely used nitrogen-rich biomasses as sole-substrates for biogas fermentations.-
