From 25 to 27 August 2026, the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) hosted PHYSMOD 2026: International Workshop on Physical Modelling of Flow and Dispersion Phenomena. The conference brought together international experts, scientists and early-career researchers specialising in the physical modelling of flow and dispersion processes in the atmospheric boundary layer.
Wind tunnel experiments and physical modelling, supplemented by numerical simulations: the three-day programme offered a wide range of current research highlights. Topics discussed included flow and dispersion patterns in built-up areas, lift effects, the validation of numerical and analytical models, and quality assurance in experimental set-ups. The popular session on ‘Obnoxious Operational Problems’ (OOPs)/Big Fails also facilitated an open, practical exchange of experiences regarding everyday measurement challenges, stumbling blocks and unexpected problems in the laboratory.
The workshop was a resounding success: from the lecture sessions to the social programme, the event offered fascinating insights for everyone. This was also reflected in the consistently positive feedback from participants. Particularly noteworthy was the lively exchange between established researchers and students, which has traditionally been a key component of the PHYSMOD series, launched in Prague in 1999, and which also provided fresh impetus for future collaborations in Potsdam.
