Summary
Nowadays, the biotechnological production of succinic acid is based on sugars derived from plants for food and feed production. The aim of the RUBIO project is to explore the feasibility of producing pure, polymerisable succinic acid from biogenic residues. In the project, second generation (2G) raw materials are digested using the LX process developed by LXP GmbH and the LX demonstration plant. Subsequently, polymerisable succinic acid is produced from it in the biotechnological lab and pilot plant complex at ATB via hydrolysis, fermentation and purification. Research into raw material flexibility is an important task within the project. The RUBIO project thus aims to investigate a completely new material utilisation of 2G raw materials that do not compete with food and animal feed and, in the longer term, to raise the potential of biogenic residues and waste materials for higher-value applications such as materials & chemicals.
