The IEEE Workshop METROAGRIFOR will provide a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge metrology in agriculture, forestry, and food production, driven by the challenges of climate change and digitalisation. It takes part from November 9–11, 2026 at the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB).
Central topics will be AI, IoT, and Robotics. Presentations will demonstrate how advanced AI models are used for pest and disease detection, irrigation optimization, and yield forecasting. Autonomous systems, including drones and ground robots, will be reported, capturing tasks like high-throughput phenotyping and precise, plant-specific treatments.
The metrological foundation is provided through sensor technologies in various applications from soil to fork. This includes non-destructive, in-field soil analysis using techniques like spectroscopy, and the fusion of satellite and drone data to create high-resolution 3D models of crops for detailed analysis. Adaptation of plant production to climate change will be addressed, considering research on optimizing water management and mitigating risks like frost and heat stress. In food quality, non-destructive methods using optical sensors and spectroscopy will be highlighted for assessing fruit ripeness and quality to improve harvest and storage management.
Overall, the workshop will provide insights into a most recent trend: the fusion of multi-modal data, analyzed by advanced AI, and operationalized through automated systems to make agricultural operations more precise, resilient, and sustainable.
