Summary
At present, cotton is cultivated in river regions of South Kazakhstan at the expense of soil and regional water balance under intensive irrigation. The BMBF-funded project KasHemp - Development of a process for the production of high-quality textile hemp fibres on cotton sites in South Kazakhstan and implementation of German harvesting and processing technology aims to develop an alternative concept to the cultivation, initial and further processing of an industrially usable raw material, which can be put into practice without additional use of natural resources and without competition to food and animal feed production. Compared to cotton, bast fibre plants such as hemp are grown in a much more environmentally friendly way, as the rapid population development and low susceptibility to diseases and pests mean that pesticides are largely unnecessary. In addition, the physiology of the hemp plant (e.g. root system) allows sufficient biomass growth with a comparatively low supply of surface water. The avoidance of irrigation reduces the risk of soil salination and thus contributes to the avoidance of land degradation. In order to obtain high-quality textile fibres, the production process must be developed from agricultural cultivation through harvesting to fibre extraction, taking into account regional conditions in agriculture and Central Asian industry. The focus is on the production of lignin- and pectin-free, tear-resistant and fine fibres in a quality comparable to cotton or wool in order to be used as a blending partner in textile products of the regional processing industry. German and regional project partners will deal with cultivation technology studies during the growing season and the adaptation of harvesting technology to the requirements of textile use on the basis of variety comparisons of promising fibre hemp varieties adapted to regional conditions. For the resulting harvest biomass, processing technologies for the production of textile processable hemp fibres will be developed, among others with the participation of the ATB. In this context, the methods to be determined and the knowledge to be derived from them for changing material and fabric properties under the given environmental conditions during the growth, harvest and post-harvest period as well as the further process steps up to the processing of the fibre qualities achieved are essential.
