How can digital technologies make agriculture more sustainable and efficient worldwide? To address this question together, ATB and the National Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) have entered into a strategic partnership. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during a virtual ceremony to lay the foundations for future collaboration.
The global agricultural sector is facing enormous challenges, including climate change, limited resources, and the need to feed a growing population. Digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and intelligent data management, offer crucial solutions. Realizing their full potential requires international exchange of knowledge and experience. Cross-continental partnerships enable us to learn from one another and drive innovation forward more quickly.
Recently, delegate Guadalupe Tiscornia (INIA Uruguay) visited the ATB. The focus of her visit was an in-depth discussion about digitalization in agriculture. The INIA coordinator of digital transformation discussed the potential and hurdles involved in implementing AI and intelligent data management with ATB researchers. A highlight of the visit was touring the agromechatronics hall, where current projects on robotics and sensor technology were vividly presented. The visit concluded with the hybrid signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU): while Barbara Sturm, Scientific Director at the ATB, signed on site in the presence of Tiscornia, Miguel Sierra, President of INIA, signed from his home country. Sebastián Oviedo and Sofía Stirling (INIA) attended the signing online and discussed future collaborations.
ATB contributes its expertise in agromechatronics, data science and the application of digital technologies in livestock farming and crop production to the partnership. Our researchers develop sensor-based systems and autonomous technologies that enable precise and resource-efficient agriculture – both in the field and in the barn.
The new cooperation between the ATB and INIA paves the way for joint research projects. "I am extremely pleased about this strategic cooperation," said Barbara Sturm. "It enables us to learn from one another and drive the digital transformation of agriculture forward across borders." INIA Uruguay is an excellent partner for testing and further developing digital solutions under different climatic and economic conditions. Our goal is to create robust, practical technologies that will be a real asset to farmers on both sides of the Atlantic."
