Summary
Functional integration in composite materials enables more cost-effective, resource-efficient, lighter and more reliable components and systems. One major disadvantage is the difficulty of recycling due to the multi-material combinations. Sensors are increasingly being integrated into highly stressed components in order to increase the safety and intelligence of systems, vehicles, machines and buildings. Piezo-active polymers such as PVDF are successfully used for pressure sensors, but are criticised because of the PFAS issue. A current project is therefore focussing on the sustainable integration of sensors in various composite materials. Wood composites and fibre composites are being investigated by HNEE and TH Wildau. The ATB is producing chitin and chitosan from edible insects that are considered a novel and sustainable bioresource. Chitin and chitosan are biodegradable piezoactive natural materials that can function as an alternative to PVDF.
