Summary
This project investigates systemic innovation pathways for the material and energetic valorisation of agricultural residues and by-products. The focus lies on the practical implementation of these approaches in a designated Green Model Region in eastern Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany). Central to the project is the exploration of utilisation potentials of fermentation residues, particularly from sugar beet processing, for the production of methane, ethanol, hydrogen, and biogenic CO?. These conversion processes are to be powered by surplus wind energy, with the aim of establishing flexible and sustainable transformation pathways. The overarching objective is to develop regionally embedded value chains and business models that align ecological sustainability with economic viability and societal benefit. The Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) contributes its expertise in co-creation and participatory evaluation of systemic solutions. The research group Innovations in Sociotechnical Systems applies co-creative methods to develop plausible utilisation scenarios, assess socio-economic and environmental impacts, design technology roadmaps, and prepare business models. In parallel, model-based assessment tools are being developed using an integrated systems modelling approach. By combining technology development with systemic and participatory approaches, the project makes a substantial contribution to the sustainable transformation of biogenic material flows and to building regional capacities for bioeconomy strategies.
