Transitions towards sustainable management of agricultural water demand in the Zayandeh-Rud river basin, Iran

Water scarcity has approached critical levels in many areas around the world, constraining sustainable development. About 70% of the world’s consumption of water is used for irrigation (up to 94% in developing countries). Therefore, sustainable management of agricultural water resources is expected to play a vital role in meeting growing water demand of other sectors and also future development of agricultural sector.

Broadly, this study in the framework of the Zayandeh-Life Project aims to experiment with different combinations of concepts, theories, analytical frameworks and mixed method approaches to explain the intricate institutional development of governing structures and find feasible and innovative solutions for agricultural water demand management via a case study analysis in the Zayandeh-Rud River basin, Iran.
