June 27, 2018: Green Biorefineries – Innovative added value for the use of grassland

The symposium of the EU project FORBIO will be held at ATB. The meeting focuses on the use of grassland to provide biomass for innovative bioeconomic concepts from an economic, ecological and social point of view.

The symposium will be hosted by the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) and the FORBIO project (Project No. 691846), funded by the European Commission in the EU Framework Program for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020.

The presentations address the opportunities and barriers of using former sewage fields for the cultivation of renewable raw materials, the use of green biomass as a substrate in fermentation processes and possibilities for remediation by discharging heavy metals via digestate. Examples of new added value for rural areas are presented.

In FORBIO, feasibility studies are carried out concerning the production of renewable raw materials at special sites in order to avoid an undesirable competition for land with food and feed production. The same applies to recreational and nature conservation areas.

FORBIO promotes the development of local value chains for innovative bioeconomic concepts - from an economic, ecological and social point of view.
