Summary
The cultural landscape of the Havel region between Brandenburg and Potsdam with its diverse uses and historical structures, such as orchards, cropland and grassland, is in some cases in great need of restoration and can hardly fulfil its landscape-shaping and CO2-reducing function (fens). Up to now, there has been a lack of information and knowledge exchange between important stakeholders in order to generate long-term solutions. The project is therefore building a network for sustainable land use in the Potsdam cultural landscape consisting of land users, nature conservation associations, environmental education providers, researchers and the general public. Furthermore, the special cultural landscape is to be upgraded through elements of landscape design and nature conservation as well as through biotope networks. In addition to ecological and economic aspects, leisure and recreational use in connection with environmental education play an important role. Two main points are combined in the project: preservation of the diverse cultural landscapes to the west and north of Potsdam, as well as in the urban area, and site-appropriate, climate-friendly land use. In addition to setting up the network, an action strategy is to be developed as a regional cultural landscape plan with landscape conservation and agricultural recommendations for land users, the surrounding municipalities and other stakeholders. Even after the end of the project, the network is to remain active through annual thematic events. The ATB, as a research institution in the region that deals with the climate-adapted use of landscape in numerous projects, contributes with its expertise, e.g. on possibilities for the industrial use of biomass of sites that are managed in a climate-friendly way.
