Summary
The aim of the project is to promote the use of biomass and residues in Brandenburg through site-specific production and processing, also beyond the food and animal feed sector. Especially by closing material cycles, a contribution can be made to the targeted circular economy with minimisation of residual and waste product flows. In the processing of the above-mentioned biogenic resources, the focus of this project is on biotechnological processes, which are seen as having great opportunities and potential in the concept of a bioeconomy. Priority will be given to the production of biobased chemicals by means of fermentation processes, the further processing of which in the chemical industry will lead to bioplastics. The raw material costs have a considerable influence on the economic viability of bioprocesses, so that the use of residual materials is becoming increasingly important. However, this cost advantage is offset by the complex and changing composition of these materials, which poses a number of challenges in their handling, pre-treatment and processing. New material utilisation paths of renewable raw materials of the so-called second generation (2G, lignocellulose such as straw and wood or also fibrous/solid-containing residues from agriculture, industry and municipalities), which do not stand in competition with food and animal feed, are being investigated. Additional effects in terms of sustainable resource use can be achieved if different products are obtained from a material stream in several process stages.
