Summary
Mixed-flow dryers are used worldwide for the convective drying of large mass flows of grain (up to 150 kg/h) and classified to be established, far developed, and economic. However, unfavourable designs and air conduction result in locally different drying conditions. As a consequence, considerable fluctuations occur in grain moisture and temperature distributions over the dryer cross section accompanied by elevated energy consumption. The evenness of drying in mixed-flow grain dryers is mainly influenced by the arrangement and allocation of the air ducts for inlet and outlet air. The prevailing design problem is characterized by particle trajectories of single grain portions that just pass along hot inlet or cold outlet air ducts, respectively. The collaborative project "GETRO" is aimed to develop an innovative dryer design so as to homogenize the drying process. With this design, nearly unique drying histories of single grains having different particle trajectories will be reached. Subsequently, the moisture content fluctuations will be reduced and grain quality as well as energy efficiency are increased. SME partners of the joint project are the Neuero Farm- und Fördertechnik GmbH, Melle to be the potential manufacturer of the innovative dryer and the Agrarhandel Mecklenburg-Vorpommern GmbH, Schwerin who is the prospective operator of the dryer demonstrator. Scientific partners are the Chairs of Thermal and Mechanical Process Engineering of the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, respectively. The venture is structured in the following subprojects: " Mathematical modelling of the drying process and design development (at laboratory and semi-technical scale) " Construction and installation of the industrial scale dryer demonstrator " Large-scale testing of functionality and energy efficiency
