Summary
The overall objective of the project is the identification and verification of microbial system condition indicators and the development of process models based on them for trouble-free and demand-oriented process control. This will support the future increased usability of residual materials, which are often difficult to ferment and/or process-critical and occur in varying quantities and compositions. In order to achieve this goal, process variations relevant to practice (including typical stress situations) for differently resistant biogas microbiomes are specifically and systematically induced in laboratory fermenters in order to identify microbial indicators for specific system states and their stress tolerance potential against acting and constantly changing environmental factors. As a result, threshold values for critical process conditions are to be determined under which indicator species or indicator groups accumulate or reduce/disappear. This should create the conditions for developing and applying simple, rapid and cost-effective microbiological detection methods. Models for the temporal development of microbial diversity, in particular microbial system status indicators, will be used to predict how microbial communities react to process variations in order to derive recommendations for action to prevent process disturbances in practical operation.
