How can we replace fossil fuels in the production of plastics, for example? This is the question adressed by José Pablo López-Gómez. The bioprocess engineer is working as a post-doc at ATB since June 2018. His academic career began at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México with a Bachelor in Chemical Engineering. Holding a grant from Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation he first studied at the University of Technology Sydney before completing his Master studies in Biotechnology at the University of Manchester, where in 2016 he very successfully received his doctorate in Bioprocess Engineering. As a post-doc, he first worked at the Laboratoire d'Ingénierie des Systèmes Biologiques et des Procédés (LISBP) in Toulouse before joining the ATB-team in 2018. He is currently researching in the EU funded project PERCAL on the biotechnological production of biobased chemicals from municipal waste.

Dipl.-Ing. David Janke is dealing with this complex question in his PhD thesis, which is close to being finalised. The air exchange rate of naturally ventilated barns is an important planning and influencing variable for animal welfare and a basis for evaluating the environmental impact. David Janke studied mechanical engineering with a focus on fluid dynamics at Technical University Berlin. Since 2016, he researches at ATB on the possibilities of recording and modelling air exchange rates and emissions from animal housing facilities.
