The circular bioeconomy plays a key role in the sustainable and future-oriented transformation of society and the economy. Dr Christian Patermann is considered a pioneer of the bioeconomy and founded the first German Bioeconomy Council with several fellow campaigners in 2009. We are delighted to welcome Dr Patermann to the ATB and cordially invite you to our colloquium:
"Recent developments in the bioeconomy in Europe and the world - perspectives for the ATB in times of polycrises"
After a 90min presentation by Dr Patermann, there will be an opportunity for questions and open exchange on the topics addressed.
About Christian Patermann:
Long before sustainability and circular economy concepts reached the mainstream, Christian Patermann set the course for one of the most fundamental transformations of our time. As Programme Director at the European Commission, he laid the strategic foundation for the "Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy" (KBBE) strategy, which still shapes bioeconomic research and innovation throughout Europe today. His foresight made it possible to no longer view ecology and economy as opposites, but as synergetic forces for a sustainable society. In Germany, he was the driving force behind the founding of the first German Bioeconomy Council in 2009 - a milestone that emphasised the relevance of the topic. In recognition of his life's work, the Christian Patermann Bioeconomy Award, named after him, has been presented since 2025 for pioneering technologies in the bio world and will in future honour outstanding personalities in the bioeconomy.
