Summary
In Brandenburg, there are extensive lowland moor areas with a great diversity of habitats, which are, however, almost completely drained and subject to progressive degradation. There is preliminary work on rewetting in several moorland-rich regions of the state, long-standing research activities on material and energetic biomass utilisation and interest from processing companies. The WetNetBB project is intended to act as a catalyst for a large-scale transformation to sustainable peatland use by taking up and bringing together these developments, implementing peatland-preserving water levels at typical sites, implementing and demonstrating exemplary procedures for land management and biomass use, and thus radiating beyond the project sites and areas. The overall objective of the project is to create a network of model and demonstration projects for the use of wet fens with representative fen areas, biomass utilisation paths and relevant actors in Brandenburg. The area represents local conditions such as hydrogenetic bog types, trophic levels, water regime types and vegetation as well as operational conditions for biomass utilisation and includes the bog-rich regions of Rhinluch/Havelland, Mittlere Havel, Uckertal/Randowbruch and Spreewald. The aim of the WetNetBB project is in the end to demonstrate the unique synergy potentials of peatlands for climate, soil, water and biodiversity protection as well as for regional value creation and thus to create acceptance and interest for sustainable peatland use in the selected regions and beyond.
