Project PERCAL startet

July 5, 2017: PERCAL aims at utilizing the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW) for producing  intermediate chemical products such as bioethanol, lactic acid, or succinic acid. The project is funded with a budget of 3.4 M€ for 3 years within the framework of Bio Based Industries Joint Undertaking under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. ATB is partner in the project.

Partners of the PERCAL “Chemical building blocks from versatile MSW biorefinery” project consortium met for their kick-off meeting on July 4-5, 2017 in Valencia (Spain).

The objective of PERCAL project is to develop intermediate chemical products such as bioethanol, lactic acid, or succinic acid at high yield and purity from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW). These products are of huge industrial interest. They will be used as chemical building blocks to manufacture eco-friendly ethyl lactate, hot melt adhesives, biopolyester-polyols for the production of polyurethanes, as well as the fabrication of biosurfactants from lipid and protein remaining fraction of biowaste.

The international PERCAL consortium is composed of 12 organisations: IMECAL, AIMPLAS and CENER (Spain), Agricultural University of Athens (Greece),  ATB Potsdam and Covestro (Germany), Genth University (Belgium), TBW Research (Austria), VISUM (Ireland), SOFTER Group (Italy), Hayat Kimya (Turkey) and Exergy (United Kingdom).

The project is coordinated by IMECAL and is funded by the Bio Based Industries Joint Undertaking under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 745828 with a budget of 3.4 M € over a period of three years.
