Lactic acid for biopolymers

Biotechnological production of lactic acid in the ATB pilot plant
Biotechnological production of lactic acid in the ATB pilot plant

From vegetable raw or waste materials, such as grain, straw or bagasse, we produce by means of biotechnological processes lactic acid - a basic chemical for bioplastics. The continuous fermentation processes and the technical structure of a resource-efficient down-stream processes are implemented in a pilot plant. The scale up to preindustrial level enables process optimization from the various raw materials and conversion technology to delivery of product samples with specific characteristics. The aim is a stable and economically competitive process technology based on a wide range of raw materials.

Current research:

• Expansion of feedstock materials for the production of lactic acid

• Selection and use of new lactic acid bacterial strains

• Production of pure L-and D-lactic acid

• Proof of the technical and biological long-term stability of the fermentation process
