The THz laboratory contains a measuring station with a THz system based on Backward-wave Oscillators (BWO's). This setup enables measurements with continuous radiation (CW) and output power of a few milliwatt. The radiation frequency is precisely tunable in a range from 258 GHz to 370 GHz which results in a sample-dependent spectrum.

In addition, the beam can be focused and positioned on the sample. From this, site-dependent spectra can be combined into a hyperspectral image.

Within the framework of basic research, we are investigating various soil, sand, silt and clay samples with particular attention to the grain size composition, the content of carbon and soil moisture.
