The aim of the project Intelligence for Soil – Integrated System for Site-Specific Soil Fertility Management I4S is to develop a sensor-based system, which in particular provides recommendations for site-specific fertilization management and is therefore intended to improve soil functions and reduce environmental pollution. With the help of newly developed mobile soil sensors and soil modeling processes, spatially highly resolved information is obtained. The data will be used by a user-friendly decision support system for the control of N-, P-, K- and lime fertilization - differentiated for almost every square meter of soil. ATB coordinates with I4S one of 10 interdisciplinary research projects within Bonares - Soil as a sustainable resource for the bioeconomy, a funding initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).
The project COOL aims at the development of an application software for flow measurements and modeling of boxes and storage rooms, both for the establishment of new premises regarding design, box design and-stacking, fan selection and operation as well as for energy and product quality-related optimization of already commissioned spaces. Through this holistic approach energy savings of more than 20% from the current about 80 kWh per tonne of product and storage season are to be achieved.
COOL is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) in the framework of the program "Central Innovation Programme for SMEs (ZIM)".

OptiBarn is targeting to develop region-specific, sustainable adaptation strategies to climate change for animal housing. OptiBarn is focusing on an optimized climatization of naturally ventilated buildings for dairy farms. These housing systems are particularly affected by climate change since extremes and variabilities in the outdoor climate are directly reflected in the indoor environment. OptiBarn will develop innovative technical and management solutions under practical conditions to improve animal welfare. The transnational project "Optimized animal specific barn climatization facing temperature rise and increased climate variability (OptiBarn)" is funded in the framework of the FACCE ERA-NET+ Initiative „Climate Smart Agriculture“ by BMBF and BMEL and supported by the project agency BLE.
The project "Nitrogen-Turnover" ("N-Umsatz") targets the development and optimization of process engineering and microbiological solutions to avoid ammonia inhibition in the biogas production process. The focus is biogas production using nitrogen rich renewables and residues from agriculture as feedstocks. Special interest is focused on system microbiology.
LandPaKT wants to systematically analyse the greenhouse gas mitigation potentials and their corresponding costs on the farm level. Leibniz Graduate School: Agricultural techniques: potentials and costs of greenhouse gas mitigation (LandPaKT) is funded by the Leibniz-Association in the context of the "Joint Initiative for Research and Innovation” of BMBF and started in May 2013. With LandPaKT, the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering (ATB) and the Albrecht Daniel Thaer-Institute of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences of Humboldt University Berlin combine their competences and offer a structured, interdisciplinary environment for PhD students.
Conversion of biomass into biochar and adjusting it to soil can be a possible strategy for climate change mitigation and soil amendment technique. The objective of this research network is to coordinate research activities on the use of biochar in agriculture to provide a better understanding of the potentials of biochar use in agriculture. We investigate the environmental and economic effects of biochar use in agriculture in the temperate zone and in the tropics, at the examples of Brandenburg (Germany) and Selangor (Malaysia).
