Areas of research

The flighted rotating drum is commonly used in food, mineral and pharmaceutical industries for drying, mixing, coating, or chemical reaction process, as flights lift up particles and give them a higher chance to contact with the gas. In last decades, much work has been carried out on flighted rotating drum including particle mixing behavior, particle residence time distribution, and the flight's discharge characteristics. However, few reports about the moving behavior of particle or gas flow, which is closely related to the quality of final products and the performance of drum. <br/>

The aim of this project is to investigate the characteristics of particle motion in the flighted rotating drum and study the interactions between particle and gas phase. The particle flow and air flow are modeled by Discrete Element Method (DEM) using software LIGGGHTS, and the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method by software ANSYS. The future prospect is to design efficient and gentle flighted rotating dryers.
