Post Harvest Technology

ATB operates its own technical laboratories in the lab and pilot plant scale for producing biochar using different mechanisms such as pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). The biochar laboratory has adequate facilities for characterizing physical, chemical, and biological properties of biochar.

The primary focus of biochar laboratory is to produce biochar from various organic wastes and to process them accordingly prior to the application in the soil. As a soil conditioner, the biochar increases the sorption capacity of nutrients and water in the soil. The biochar should also lead to a long-term removal of CO2 from the atmosphere and thus establish a carbon sink in the agricultural production chain.

Main Equipment:

  • Batch-pyrolysis
  • Batch-HTC (up to 5 gal)
  • Filtration
  • Grinding / milling of samples
  • For further information please see our service overview

Current activities:

  • Production of biochar from different feedstocks using pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) at different scales
  • Pre-treatment / post-treatment / product refinement
  • Consulting on specialized and technical aspects
  • For further information please see our service overview
