Research in the field of precise culture processing in horticulture focuses on determining the habitus (crown volume, indices on leaf area index estimation and water condition), on non-destructive spectral-optical analysis of the harvest product and on the use of such systems for the comprehensive non-invasive characterization of relevant plant characteristics (phenotyping). The measured data is collated to increase yield and fruit quality and simultaneously decrease resource requirements, particularly irrigation water. For this purpose, we develop bio-physical methods for the automated recording of plant parameters.

Current research

  • Method development for the characterization of fresh fruits and vegetables in-situ 
  • Observation of the process chain from production through storage to packaging
  • Measurement of the phenotypical development of fruit trees, whereas applications in sensor-supported floral thinning and automated fruit pruning exist
  • Identification of fruit development stages and quality in-situ, whereby the harvest date determination for domestic pome fruit species is supported by physiological data
  • Automated identification of fruit development stages for stone fruit species in-situ ( applications in harvest management and irrigation control)
  • Development of basic knowledge on the physiology of horticultural products (adaptions to climatic factors in production, storage, modeling of the gas exchange between fresh product and atmosphere relevant for freshness and packaging)
  • Optimization of non-invasive characterization of relevant (physiological) plant characteristics by means of current and innovative spectral-optical and  fluorescence-based measuring systems
  • Development of agronomic models

Ongoing research projects

  • Characterization of spatially and temporally disaggregated distribution of plant, soil and microclimatic variables. Herewith, physiological plant parameters, phenotypical plant characteristics, soil data and atmospheric data (air temperature, rainfall, radiation, gases) are recorded. 
  • Optimization of process parameters in consideration of the plant data. Physiological plant conditions are mapped with the aid of in-situ sensors. With particular regard to fruit development, quality-providing characteristics and yield, agronomical models shall describe the influence of surrounding factors on water balance and plant performance, to make it, together with the industry, available to the grower.
