Climate change and upcoming shortages of fossil fuels increase the need for renewable
energy and carbon sequestration. The aim of the APECS project (Anaerobic Pathways to
Renewable Energies and Carbon Sinks) is to develop a novel process that uses organic
wastes to provide both – renewable energy and carbon sequestration.

APECS will provide the scientific and technical basis for an efficient and sustainable
production of bio-methane as a high quality fuel and biochar as a long lasting carbon
sink and an efficient soil improver.
The technical solution is to use the individual
advantages of bioconversion and thermo-chemical carbonization to create a powerful
and synergetic hybrid process. In comparison to a sole process the hybrid process
promises a higher energetic efficiency and expands the range of usable raw materials
and potential products. Such technologies are showing a growing worldwide interest.
This public-funded project is one of the winners of the program
“Ideas Competition BioEnergy –
To Break New Ground” as part of the framework
“BioEnergy 2021” by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
“BioEnergy 2021” intends to support innovative working groups and projects aiming to increase the use of bioenergy and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
