Sensor-based technologies and integrated assessment models in food production chains - Towards enhanced exploration of sustainability potentials

The agricultural and food industry needs to implement novel quality management systems in the food production chain to maintain a high quality and safety level in products and processes and to minimize produce losses.
PSn2 aims to improve sustainability of value-added food production chains "cereal grain"  and "perishables". Within PSn2 new sensor-integrated systems for online monitoring of process and product quality are being developed. Furthermore, critical points of particular relevance for quality and safety matters are being identified, assessed and quantified. Non-destructive methods are being developed for application to determine micro-organisms, and thus to inhibit mycotoxins and to prevent high decay-induced losses in the production chain. Additionally, technology assessment provides planning criteria for the implementation of new sensor techniques into production chains.

PSN2 - Innovative approaches for new sensor systems
Avoidance
of funghi and quality loss in grain through
-  dryer control system based on mathematical model
-  new online microwave moisture sensor
Monitoring
of perishables in the postharvest chain through
-  data base supported modular remote system with intelligent labels
-  evaluation of process quality through product monitoring (spectrometrics, mechanical and thermodynamical factors)
Detection
of funghi in grain and perishables through
-  sensor systems based on analyses of color, hyperspectral, thermographic and chlorophyll fluorescence images
-  spectroscopic sensor and multigas sensor array
-  biosensor with microfluid system
