Area of research 1: Environmentally sound and competitive agricultural production processes

Research program 1.2

Sensor-based information retrieval and management

Head of the program:  Dr. Detlef Ehlert
Department 4 - Engineering for crop production

Research topics

Sensors and their integration into technical processes
  Technologies for precision farming

The agriculture is focussed on the production of herbal and animal products with high quality and food safety. Limited natural resources, demands towards environment friendly and transparent grown products, and also the compliance with the competitiveness of the farms drive into more precision in agriculture. Steuerung präziser Düngerdosierung unter Einsatz des PendelsensorsThis increased precision can be performed only, if sufficiently relevant soil, crop and animal parameters are available. Only by use of suitable sensors these parameters can be acquired in the needed density and quantity. The efficient preparing and use of the data are further challenges.

The first theme in the research program contains the development, modifying, and exemplary use of sensors in horticultural and agricultural primary production. Based on the current level of knowledge - on the field of sensor technology (mainly in the high-tech-sector) suitable solution approaches for sensors are analysed and modified for agricultural purposes. The comprehensive test and assessment of new sensor technologies should be targeted on a high quality of research results.

The second research theme is the advancement of precision agriculture technology. In this mainly application-oriented solutions are investigated under the aspect of practical use, e.g. sensor based site specific farming. The works are focussed on questions of sensor involving in existing production processes, of expected business effects and not at least on the environment.
