Effects of postharvest treatments on physiological properties of fresh, perishable produces

Fruits, vegetables and ornamental still live after harvest. In the entire postharvest period, many biotic and abiotic factors may affect their physiology. Their physiological responses directly influence product quality. Hence, our research aims to characterize the effect and regulation of metabolic responses of fruits, vegetables and ornamental as well as the influences of ontogeny and environmental conditions on it. The exact knowledge of these reactions allows the target-oriented optimization of quality maintenance in harvest, storage, processing and retail.

Packaging is an important means to preserve product quality of perishable horticultural produces. It protects against climatic and mechanical stresses and it may also improve storage due to the formation of a favourable internal atmosphere. The interactive effects of package material, package type and form on the physiological properties of vegetables and fruits are currently under investigation.

Cherries and plums are non-climacteric fruits. This implies that they are not suitable for long-term storage. Nevertheless, under certain conditions, storage would be desirable, e.g. to circumvent production peaks or to prolong selling season. Optimisation of harvest, pre cooling, packaging and storage conditions with special respect to local varieties is necessary to improve income and to reduce costs of producers in Brandenburg.

As biennials, carrots possess the ability to acclimate to low temperature in autumn. This leads to a net accumulation of osmotically active solutes (osmotic adjustment) and reduced tissue elasticity (elastic adjustment). Both processes directly influence product quality. We aimed to characterize the physiological processes and their regulation as influenced by ontogeny and environment. Furthermore, the effects of these reactions on storage and processing has been investigated in collaboration with Dr. I Sjöholm and F Gomez Galindo (Dept. Food Engineering, Univ. Lund, Sweden).

Effects of preharvest stresses on postharvest quality maintenance of fruits, vegetables and ornamentals

Postharvest behaviour of a horticultural product may be partially determined by pre harvest conditions. Thus, the former may be improved by optimising the latter. To reach this aim, it is essential to comprehensively characterise the possible influence of pre harvest on product quality at harvest (cooperation with Dr. Susanne Huyskens, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin; Prof. Dr. Monika Schreiner, IGZ Großbeeren).

Water relations and mechanical properties of horticultural fresh products

From harvest to the point of sale, most horticultural produce are exposed to mechanical and climatic stresses, reducing freshness and product quality. The influences of these loads on product water status, a major determinant of product quality and a link to the mechanical properties of these products are currently investigated. Understanding changes in water relations and other physiological parameters may help to optimise postharvest handling thus leading to a better keeping quality.

The determination of the internal quality of produces, i.e. evaluation of their total physiological efficiency, facilitates the prediction of their potential postharvest behaviour, at least to a certain degree. Chlorophyll a fluorescence analysis and chlorophyll fluorescence imaging are well established tools to evaluate photosynthetic performance in plants. Hence, both methods can be used as indicators of internal quality. They can also be applied for the early detection of plant diseases and of produce responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. These approaches, alone or in combination with other techniques such as hyperspectral or multispectral imaging, will be optimized to extent their potential applications in practice.

Environmental plant biology – stress physiology

The effects of low and high salt concentration in the rooting medium on plant water status and osmotic adaptation was studied in several mangroves species growing under controlled conditions. These investigations were performed in co-operation with Prof. Dr. M Popp (University of Wien; Department of Chemical Ecology and Ecosystem Research, http://131.130.57.239/cms/index.php?id=290) and Dipl. Biol. M Veste (CEBra Cottbus, http://www.ecology-climate.de).

Frequently, both diurnal and seasonal fluctuations in atmospheric CO₂ concentration occur largely influencing the photosynthetic activity of plants. This has been investigated in detail using Populus tremula as a model.

Water use efficiency, carbon and water relations as well as nutrient relations were investigated in major components of the coastal and the mountain fynbos. Fynbos, a heath vegetation type, is found in regions of South Africa with a Mediterranean-type climate. The influence of drought, heat stress, natural precipitation and irrigation, and the interrelationship of plant and soil were of special interests.

Effects of ontogeny and environment on the expression of CAM

The influence of internal and external parameters on mode and expression of CAM was investigated in plants of Plectranthus marrubioides (Lamiaceae) as well as in CAM plants from several other species. A high metabolic flexibility may be the prerequisite of successful growth in primary and secondary succulent habitats (cooperation with Dipl. Biol. M Veste, CEBra Cottbus, http://www.ecology-climate.de).

The ephemeral, facultatively halophytic common ice plant, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, a rare vegetable crop, is often (miss-) used as an example to study stress induction of CAM. However, even well-watered plants of this species exhibit a weak CAM after having reached a certain developmental stage. The influence of plant and leaf age on the C₃ to CAM shift was investigated in well-watered and salt-stressed plants of Mesembryanthemum crystallinum.

In co-operation with Prof. Dr. CE Martin (Univ. of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, USA, http://www2.ku.edu/~eeb/faculty/martin.shtml) and Dr. GF Midgley (Ecology and Conservation, National Botanical Inst., Claremont, South Africa; http://www.nbi.ac.za/research/co2.htm) it was studied how and to what degree the diurnal acid metabolism may add to photosynthetic stability during light and drought stress in plants showing different modes of CAM. Additionally, together with Dr. K Peckmann the effects of drought on the interrelationship between mitochondrial properties and photosynthesis was analysed in plants of the PEP-CK- and ME-CAM-type. Furthermore, heat stress responses on water relations and photosynthesis (photoinhibition) of Welwitschia mirabilis were investigated in their natural habitat in the Namib desert.

Textbook etc.

A lot about methods applied in the above studies can be found in a (hopefully) well-accepted textbook, I had the pleasure to contribute. In this book, we tried to clarify the methodological and theoretical background in a readable though physical and physico-chemical correct way. In addition, the use of these methods and relevant devices are explained. We think that it may be helpful for eco-physiological, and agricultural or horticultural science as well.
